cupcakes | something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

It's a growing trend that cupcakes are outshining the ever popular wedding cake. Let's face it, they're more cost effective, individual and just as yummy!

As you may recall - my husband and I had cupcakes at our wedding. I had found a picture of inspiration, took it to the coordinator at my location and she passed it on to the head caterer. How our cupcakes were going to turn out on our wedding day was a complete surprise! We didn't have time to taste test and design sample - we just kinda went with it!

AND THEY WERE A HIT!

We got rave reviews from every age family member - and even the DJ took a picture of them for his own upcoming wedding!

Here's the picture I submitted to the caterer:

And here's how they turned out!

These days many people are resorting to JUST BAKED [a fun Michigan company] for all their cupcake needs - which is a very exciting and tasty way to go!

But do you want to take it a step further!? Then prepare to be inspired by this morning's post on Green Wedding Shoes

Love posting fun posters in the boutique windows for upcoming events!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

First up: Hollyween! Starting this Saturday at 2pm with Children's Parade [line-up at Holly Foods and ending at Magic Moments with treats from Deihl's Orchard at 3pm] Then head Downtown for Trick-or-Treating from business to business from 4-5pm!

We had so much fun at this event last year! The kids are so cute in their costumes and say the darndest things!
Check out Kel Leigh's blog post from last year!

I just might have to be a Bridal Fairy this year! Be sure to stop by for fun treats and get your children's photos taken with Kel Leigh [she will later post them for purchasing....so many people wanted her shots last year - she knows how to capture the moment!]

Next up: Ladies Night Out in Downtown Holly! Shoppes are open late with sales & specials abound! Most stores have their own trunk shows and goodies - infact, Kel Leigh & I are hosting a Bridal Show! We will feature vendors of bridal nature at [Hitched in Holly] A Uniquely Intimate Bridal Show between Something Blue Bridal Boutique & Kel Leigh Coale Photography & Design! So far you will get to enjoy: Rock the Booth [photostrip bridal favors....this will be fun for all ladies attending Ladies Night Out & the Bridal Show - a great take home from a great night out!] Bon Appetit [catering samples for your wedding reception] Posh Hair & Makeup Studio [they will be doing the hair and make-up on our live mannequins and will be doing live demos on anyone who would like their eyes re-vamped before stepping into the photo booth!] With Love [reception candy bar] ....and more as we finish rounding out the list!

Of course Kel Leigh will be showcasing all her photography in her fabulous new space and celebrating 3 years of great photos and talented design work throughout our community! We, at Something Blue Bridal Boutique, will be celebrating our first anniversary and the launch of our new line of bridal gowns by Alfred Angelo! It's so nice to have complimenting businesses next door to each other!

So much fun to be had! Hope to see you there!

About our Bridal Show poster:
Kel Leigh and I had the idea after coming across a picture from a 'Friends' episode... appropriately named 'The One With All The Wedding Dresses' ....we thought 'how fun would it be to recreate that picture for our posters!?' And perfect enough that there's myself, Kel Leigh, and her sister, Hol Leigh - who is her second photographer - to make our photo a perfect re-carnation!
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So our shot might not have the beer & champagne photographed .....{that's off to the side!} ....but this just might have to become a tradition!

[weekend of love] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

I love all things that involve anything to do with marriage!

So [of course] I was excited when my step-brother got down on one knee at his deployment party this weekend to ask Miss J to be his wife!

[BELOW]  Mr. Bill and Miss J just shortly after the proposal! We were all gathered in a circle, holding hands and in prayer for Billy's safe travels off to war....not knowing what he was about to do! {Well, I had a hutch - thanks to good 'ol Facebook...but, it allowed me to have the camera ready!}

There was even fireworks....how appropriate!

I was also thrilled when my brother-in-law text me that his good friends fiance would be coming in to see me soon and another friend told me that her cousin was out ring shopping this weekend!

[Love is in the air!]

[sassy bride] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

It just gets me how there is "the one" for every girl!

An unexpected appointment led to finding just that.

Not quite engaged yet, but knowing its coming....Miss C came armed with her mother and mother-in-law-to-be to just start the process!

We were off to a good start with Maggie Sottero's 'Athena'....love the glam that this gown offers!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

But it was the second dress that sent her over the moon...La Sposa's gown 'Maderia'

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

She attempted to try on gowns after that...but sometimes nothing quite compares!

Check out Miss C in her lovely gown! Can't wait until this gown truely becomes her in alterations!

[she had emailed me her email address so I could send her these pictures and in the tag line it said...
{miss c aka sassy bride} ....we kept telling her how sassy she looked and it hooked!]

[behind the seams] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

Did you know we have an "on-site" seamstress!? I quote on-site...as really - she's just around the corner.

Reisa is a local to Holly and has been sewing out of her home under the clever name 'Sew What' for over 30 years! From the moment she came into the boutique to introduce herself I knew that she was going to be the key to making "the one".....yours!

All the time we get, "can this be made sweet-heart?", "how will this be bustled?", "can we add a personal touch?"...and the answer is always, "YES!"

I even put Reisa to the test with my own bridal gown! About a month before the wedding I decided that I wanted to wear a bolero. {I spent a lot of time on Etsy & Ebay trying to find a bolero that by chance might match my gown... but what matches better than actual fabric from the gown!?}

So off went the train!

It was tedious work that I even had to get in on... just by taking off the appliqués around the bottom of the gown - I now know why wedding gowns cost what they do! I can only imagine taking it apart is easier than putting it together - and it was hours and hours of taking it apart for Reisa to make it the dress it is today!

Here is the stock photo of what my gown looked like before - and then after with no train and my bolero!*
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So if a dress is ever a little too long for your liking, not poofy enough, not shapely enough... you name it, Reisa can do it! And not only on the gowns you bought from Something Blue, but outside gowns as well!

Call for appointment and you will be able to meet Reisa in the comforts of our Bridal Boutique!

[chalk love] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

If there's one thing I love, it's finding great inspiration and actually taking the time to apply it to my world. Much too often I see inspiration and think...."Oh, I'll do that....someday!"

And I make things hard on myself by following blogs that are chalk full of great inspiration!

I saw a post a few months back from a design company that I originally started following because she had great personal style... you know, the women that blog daily about what they wear and their cute accessories!? {Another 'someday' for me.}

She had moved homes and needed to re-create her in-home office space and decided to do one whole wall in the chalkboard paint for endless inspiration to be posted! However, she took it a step farther...

She had wanted a personal quote towards the top of wall that she likes to live ad work by.... and of course she couldn't just hand write it....

Following her simple steps I applied her same ideas to my new chalkboard wall. She did go on to show how there is a huge difference between using regular chalk and 'Chalk Ink'....so as I patiently wait for my chalk ink to come in, here's what I accomplished with regular chalk....

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

.....stay tuned for updated version with the chalk ink!

[money tree] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

Who doesn't love an unexpected gift!?

Much thanks to Kel Leigh who brought in this little money tree for me yesterday!

She had one in the studio and it brought her much luck....and here's hoping it brings all the same for Something Blue!

Thanks Kel!

[on hold] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

This weekend my cousin Callie surprised me with being in the area and asking me to lunch with her and her little brother, AJ!

Let's just say lunch was entertaining - and delicious, thanks to Bittersweet Cafe in Downtown Holly!

And what better to do on a rainy day then try on wedding dresses!? It's quite possible that Callie could be one of our live mannequins in our upcoming mini bridal show, so we started narrowing down the selection! Which in Callie's case is next to impossible - she looks fabulous in EVERYTHING! I don't know how we'll choose just one!

AJ found an ivory ring bearer tux that he was infatuated with.... let's just say he put it on hold!
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

[can't stop painting!] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

We still have yet to finish the second half of our 'wisp of mauve' project... but today I turned my attention to our new chalkboard wall! With a small open space by the front entrance I figured it would be a great place to announce upcoming events, [such as Hitched in Holly!] specials and great vendors! It suggests that you wait 4 days for the chalkboard paint to "cure"...so I figured the sooner I painted the sooner I'd be able to decorate it up! I have a feeling I'll be coming up with all kinds of nifty stuff to tell yas!

Tomorrow's project: a framed section of photos to dress up the entry way! [Of course they are fabulous pictures from Kel Leigh Coale Photography & Design of our wedding day!]

And I'll also fill you in on our new OPEN sign that we have partially started - sent it off to Colleen at Memory Makers to put the vinyl on it! Can't wait to show it off!

This Labor Day we turned our 'doing dials up a notch'...as Home Depot likes to say! My husband helped me pick out paint and all the fixings to start transforming the boutique!

I LOVED the hot pink wall that Kel Leigh had... I really did! It was vibrant and fun and got a lot of compliments!! However, I just have had this serene and shabby vision for the boutique since day one...and what better day to do it than on a cool and windy Labor Day!?

We got half way through the wall space that we want to cover with the 'Wisp of Mauve'...stay tuned for the full finished product!!

[gleeful glamour] something blue bridal boutique, holly michigan

When ordering the new gowns from Alfred Angelo I couldn't help but keep Lea Michele's Emmy gown in mind! I thought she looked so gorgeous in her ruched gown...the mermaid flare was flawless as she worked the red carpet! I think this Alfred Angelo gown [style 2118] is a perfect match if you are trying to re-create her style!

If you love it you should schedule your appointment for about 2 weeks out so you can be one of the first to try it on when the new gowns arrive!

Hitched In Holly

"The only thing we can count on in life is change"... a favorite saying of one of my Grandmothers, or as my Dad likes to say "If your business isn't changing, it's dying." I don't think I've ever had to stand by these words or live up to them as much as I have this past year.

Sometimes the lines get blurred on when I actually started Something Blue... Kel Leigh let me have a Homecoming Dress Sale in her studio on September 19th of last year...and then I had my Grand Opening in November during Downtown Holly's Ladies Night Out...so it's kinda been a year you could say...but for some reason November just feels more official. And with another Ladies Night Out coming up this November - I say let's celebrate!

So, how are we going to celebrate you ask!? Well...how 'bout with a FREE Bridal Show! It's not as if there's not already hundreds of ladies Downtown during a Ladies Night Out in Holly {almost 400 ladies in May - among the sleet & rain!} ...so why not add a few Brides to the mix!?

Join us for 'Hitched in Holly', a mini bridal show inside Something Blue that night!

Our main feature will be LIVE MANNEQUINS in our new line from Alfred Angelo! You heard me!! We will now be carrying a small line from Alfred Angelo! It's just the natural progression of the boutique and we're excited to bring you 10 brand new gowns to choose from! We will have 2 or 3 special ladies dressed to the 9 and posing live in our boutique windows as the ladies pass by! {How fun is that!?}

Also that night 'Rock the Booth' will be participating with us! They have offered to set up shop in our boutique to bring you a fun little take away from the night! Brides & guests will be happy to experience Rock the Booth as great entertainment and favor option for their wedding receptions!

AND, Brides-to-Be & Current Brides {brides of Something Blue that have not had their wedding date or alterations done to their gown as of Novemeber 12th} Can enter to win $250 towards a new gown purchase or towards alterations and jewelry!
*Must enter in person the night of event.

We have a couple more vendors in the works and will notify you as soon as they are for sure locked down!

Okay...okay....enough with the Bridal Show...I'm sure you want to know what gowns we will be getting in! So wait no more...

The 8 pictures grouped here at the top should be here in a matter of weeks!!

And these bottom two {quickly taken with my phone's camera} should be here by the end of the year from Alfred Angelo's 2011 line!

friday i'm in love.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Is anyone else elated that it's Friday!? Going to catch up on some much needed zzzz's tonight in prep for all the festivities in Downtown Holly tomorrow! The day starts with the Holly Police Department's 'Safety Day' featuring child i.d. kits, bike helmet fittings and giveaways, fire engine demos and much more starting at 2pm in Cyclone Park! Then head over to the downtown area for Sights, Sounds & Tastes starting at 5. They will have food, music and raffles til 8 and then dancing in the streets til 11! If dancing's not your thing than be sure to head back over to Cyclone Park for one of our FREE MOVIE NIGHTS! We will be showing BEE MOVIE at dusk! Bring your blankets, chairs & bug spray! We will have concessions again: popcorn, water, & candy!

party dress.

I was excited to see one of our Brides, Tammy, come in last night with her friend and sister to check out the new Bridesmaids dresses!

I loved working with Tammy to help her find the perfect dress...her first appointment was fun and she tried on many great dresses...however...I didn't see 'the face'...you know, the one that says, 'this is the one'. So I told her to hold off making decisions and that I would be getting some dresses within the next week and would keep her in mind as I picked them out. And sure enough... the one I brought home with her in mind was exactly what she was looking for....perfect for her castle wedding!

So of course I am happy to help her find the perfect dresses to go along with her gorgeous dress...{one a lot of you had commented on, Maggie Sottero's "McCall"}...and her unique location!

The runners up are...{pictured below}

Actually the first one is the bridesmaid dress that my girls wore in our wedding! I happened to visit my Maid of Honor this weekend and stole the dress back to use as a sample...and good thing I did! I pulled a picture from our wedding of her in the dress to show it in action...we loved the vintage feel of the charcoal and the subtleties of the ruched chiffon!

The second and third choices they liked because they could possibly go together and she could let all her girls pick which dress they liked best for them!

Decisions...decisions!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

However...I didn't think that there would be a wedding gown sale on the horizon!

I had just picked up said wedding dress on Monday morning and had just taken my own photos of the dress {since I couldn't find any decent stock photos of it online.} The dress itself I contemplated getting because its so different...but I did just watch an episode of 'Say Yes to the Dress' which featured a dress pretty similar to it...so I figured, why not! It's a show stopper, so it was only fitting on a mannequin...which usually does the dresses so much more justice than on the hanger!

{Here's some before pictures I had taken of the dress}

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sara, Tammy's sister and bridesmaid, immediately knew she had to try it on! Her wedding is only a month a way...but sometimes you just know when somethings meant for you! It's a dress that not everyone can wear...but she wore it well! Well enough that it was decided that it would become her second wedding dress! Tammy had a good point; that she'd be thinking about that dress the whole time at the wedding if she didn't buy it!

So she will wear her original dress for the ceremony, family pictures and first dances...and then when the real party is about to get started...she will make an appearance in this hot gown! Our seamstress came in on the spot {she's just awesome like that!} and hemmed the dress to the needed length and to mark where to take the train off to make it all floor length {taking the train off will be less money and of better convince for Sara instead of bustling, since it's a party dress}

If I could have rocked a dress like this, I would have gotten a second one too!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

These girls are too fun! {We even talked about them being 'live mannequins' at our next Ladies Night Out in the fall! I'm honored that I was able to help sisters in their dream gown quests as well as helping make Tammy's Bridesmaids beautiful! Can't wait to see what Bridesmaids dresses she chooses...and of course...for pictures of them all done up on their big days!

Movie Night SUCCESS!

It was a first, and it was grand!

I don't think you could have had a more charming setting for an outdoor movie than Downtown Holly! We loved the ambiance that Battle Alley provided for our first ever FREE MOVIE NIGHT!

The Holly DDA's promotions committee and the Holly Area Community Coalition worked hard in prep for this exciting event. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes...the emails...the ordering...the promoting...the test runs...the gathering...So when it comes time, you can only hope that it all pays off!

And it did!

In between blowing up the giant screen, setting up concessions and queuing the movie, we tried to snap a couple pictures of our fabulous evening! It was a great time had by all and we're looking forward to seeing you at the next FREE MOVIE NIGHT!

{See below for next showing}

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Our next FREE MOVIE NIGHT is August 7th...which is going to be a big day in Holly! The Police Department will be hosting their Protect & Serve Day in Cyclone Park... this event is great for families featuring contests, demos, and giveaways starting at 11! I believe they've even added a softball game! To continue the family fun we are bringing our movie screen over to the park and showing "Bee Movie" starting at dusk! *Don't forget the bug spray, lawn chairs and that we'll be providing concessions!

Also that day is Downtown Holly's "Sights, Sounds & Tastes" put on by our Chamber of Commerce. Enjoy great food, music & raffles from 5-8 and dancing in the streets from 8-11!

So mark your calendars and block the whole day off on August 7th to spend in Holly! It's going to be a great day for families, friends and even lovers!

Man I love this town!

{HUGE thanks to the Holly DDA & the Holly Area Community Coalition for sponsoring and working our movie nights and to participating businesses that spent much time getting this event together: Kel Leigh Coale Photography & Design, Morgan's Boutique, and yours truly, Something Blue Bridal Boutique! We also couldn't have done this event without help from our fellas at the DPW and Nicole Kilpatricks's husband, Kris, for helping us execute and get the movie officially rolling last night...oh yeah, and for the ice cream!}

new accessories.

I had a lovely appointment at Posh Hair & Makeup Studio this week....and I definitely left with more than I came in for!

Kari always does an amazing job and gave my hair a freshening up that was much needed! While there we decided that a few of their handmade bridal hair accessories would work great in our boutique! Here is a sample of some of the new beauties now for sale at Something Blue!

I love the vintage-y feel that each piece has....and the occasional pop of color. I loved seeing which pieces would match up with which dresses! They are all truly beautiful...right down to their tags!

you've got the love.

When I got my new computer and transferred iTunes, it only transferred songs I had purchased from iTunes...not songs I had put on from cd's. Knowing that I would be traveling this weekend I figured I better update thee ol' iPod...and much to my surprise...I've been missing out on some of my favorite cd's! One in particular... Florence + The Machine. I can't believe that it's been a year since I bought their latest cd and that I've neglected my ears from such a voice! {However, I believe Kel Leigh has a song or so of theirs that I can tune into when she plays her iPod in the studio... I can't believe it didn't prompt me sooner!}

And so this weekend my brother Jason joins me as I make the travels northbound to our grandparents cabin...iPod prepared and all. Unfortunately Mike has to work this weekend...it will be our first time apart since we've been married...and I'm not looking forward to that part at all.

And since Mike's been more of a husband than I could have ever asked for...always there, always kind, always loving...I leave you all with Florence + The Machine's 'You've got the love'.... well, because he's got the love, the love to get me through...

Have a fabulous weekend!
