I can't believe it's almost been a month since Dayna has started interning for Something Blue! I say it's high time we introduce her to you!
Greetings!
For those who have recently visited Something Blue you may
have already seen me around. For those
who haven’t, let me introduce myself: Hi! My name is Dayna and I am here as
intern for Nicole for the summer. I have
been studying at Eastern Michigan University in the Apparel, Textiles, and
Merchandising program. I am very excited
to be a part of Something Blue and learn from Nicole, a WeddingWire award winner
for Best Dress and Attire of 2012.
So far, I have to say, I love working here with Nicole,
meeting all the brides, and helping them find the dress for their special
day. Each week, I will do my best to
write a post and I always change up the window displays, among many other
things. Hopefully you will continue to
check out our posts or maybe stop in!
-Dayna

Plus size, fuller figured, curvy . . . fashion designers can call it what they will . . . but the fact remains that the average size for American women is size 14 and up.
At Something Blue Bridal Boutique we have curated a nice selection of bridal gowns sizes 14 and up and I just wanted to quickly show that even though we will continue to order larger samples that we can still accommodate a range of sizes.
The gown below is a gorgeous blush toned Forever Yours bridal gown in a size 18. I threw it on the size 6 dress form to show that it can be clamped down and fit a size 6 dress form.

I was so excited when I saw this gown at Market last fall!
A gown that finally gives you & your maids some real options . . .
And now that I'm thinking about it - you can also order this gown floor length! {{additional fee}}
The belts can also be ordered on their own should a bride need one to dress up her gown as well! $39 - $59
I love all of our new 2012 Forever Yours inventory! Can't wait to post more about everything that has been added to the boutique in the last couple months!
WeddingWire asked us to share our top three pieces of advice to brides who are gown shopping.
What do we wish brides knew before stepping foot in your salon & what pieces of information do I feel like I'm sharing with brides over & over again?
. . . HERE'S WHAT I HAD TO SHARE . . .
1} Be VERY open to styles outside of your comfort zone. All too often I hear "I DO NOT want lace" -or- "NO big princess gowns for me!" . . . But I always try to advise that we wait to judge the fabric or cut until it's on your actual body. Sometimes it's more about how a gown feels once it's on as opposed to what makes up the gown. If you feel sexy & ready to walk down the aisle, then a style that once made you apprehensive may be just the ticket!
2} Listen to YOUR gut. It can be very overwhelming hearing what your entourage thinks about every little detail of each gown you try on. What one friend might dislike about a gown might be the one thing you really love! Often I see brides start to doubt their selection. I never want a bride slipping into her gown on her wedding day and still thinking about another gown that was really for her.
3} Don't put your gown at the bottom of your budget. I hear a lot . . . "We've already paid for the venue & catering & we're running out of budget . . . besides, I'm only wearing it for a couple hours!" While it is a few hours that can go by very quickly, your venue & food are also fleeting. All eyes will be on the happy couple & your gown all evening . . . and don't forget that your wedding photos will last a lifetime! Make sure you're in "the gown" that you'll love looking back on time & time again!
What's some advice you've learned along the way?
Please share by commenting below & we will share on Facebook!
This past week, Sarah & I had an inspiring consult with Alfred Angelo's marketing department. It was nice to have Kathy come out and personally visit our boutique, give critiques & inspire us into big improvements for the upcoming season!
The first of which . . . we have be given the good ahead to carry Alfred Angelo's Disney Princess Collection!
Their 2nd Collection of Disney Princess gowns will arrive at Something Blue Bridal Boutique after the New Year!
The boutique never ceases to amaze me with the 'life-of-its-own' it has taken on! Not every store that requests this line is approved, as there are strict parameter restrictions set in place, so our Rep was very excited to finally say YES! to our request, as she has had to turn many stores down. We are very lucky & excited to be a part of such a line that is inspired by every little girls dreams!

"Something Blue and owner Nicole are simply AMAZING! I first visited the adorable bridal boutique over the summer with my bridesmaids and was blown away by the selection of dresses, accessories, and mostly by the fact that Nicole gave us her undivided attention during the entire appointment. It was a such fun afternoon for my girls to try on a bunch of dresses, with Nicole offering her expertise every step of the way. I visited shortly thereafter to look for a dress for myself and again, was so impressed by Nicole and the selection of bridal gowns! Nicole offered lots of suggestions and helped me find the perfect dress - and had tissues on hand for my and my Mom's happy tears! It has been a real joy working with Nicole, she is talented and clearly has a passion for her bridal boutique business. I look forward to working with her for additional services she offers including invites and seating charts! I would absolutely recommend Something Blue to any bride that is hoping for a fun, unique, and memorable dress shopping experience!!"
Thanks Elizabeth!

Bride, Tammy, on her big day!
I delivered her gown to her the day of her wedding. Got her in it, laced her up & gave any wrinkles a final steam! I assisted with her veil & accessories & was there to help with anything else that I could . . . including the bridesmaid who had two children in the wedding party as well . . .
naturally - one was crying & they both needed to hurry & get dressed . . . I was there to help!
It's nice to have someone to just take orders or take matters into their own hands as they arise.
I love my brides, I love weddings . . . it's a natural fit!
I always found this fascinating for some reason, the history of bridesmaids. It seems they were more of a 'protector' than a task taker.
"While in modern times a bridesmaid is expected to assist with anything the bride requests or needs, apparently her duties were of a more serious, if not at least supernatural, nature in earlier days. A custom once existed where maidens dressed similarly to the bride would accompany her as her protectors on her way to the groom's village. This would deflect spurned suitors from kidnapping the bride or from stealing her dowry {money brought to the marriage.} Roman law once required witnesses to come to weddings in order to confuse evil spirits as to the identity of the bride and groom. This meant that female wedding attendants came to a marriage ceremony in garments akin to the bride's, while male wedding attendants--the forebears of ushers--wore attire that resembled the groom's own clothing. This supposedly threw off bad luck that could be directed towards an easily identifiable bride and groom."

And of course, bridesmaids still wear white today. It makes for a light & fresh color palette! It allows for florals to really pop & can make for a cute summer dress afterwards! I'm sure it's not what most expected to see at the Royal Wedding - but really, what other color would she have done? With so many vibrant dominant colors of that day I feel she would have clashed . . . and I honestly don't think she took away from the Bride. She wore the dress extremely well . . . but no one could out do Kate that day!
Just make sure that if you do have your Maids in white that you are easily identifiable. Whether it be that the bride is the only one in a floor length gown . . . or the only one with statement jewelry . . . dyed shoes . . . or something of the like.
I have a pretty good idea who I think is the bride in this photo, but there's enough going on & similarities to make you go 'hmmmmmmmmmm'. . .
I've recently been mad about peach & teal . . . . I saw it on a kitchen set once & have been in love with it ever since. And funny since I don't usually go for too much color . . . and of course I'm not talking a bright peach or a vibrant teal . . . I'm thinking a dustier peach & more vintage teal . . . perhaps like the elements in this Inspiration Board by Wedding Nouveau!
I have this weird feeling about peach becoming a wildly popular bridal color again! {It made a pretty popular run in the 80s . . .}
So much has gone on this last week & it's at times such as these that I find myself fortunate to be able to step away from the bridal world demands & take time for friends & family!
Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting with my cousin, Danielle, & her husband, Russ, & their children, who I just call my niece & nephew, Natalie & Joey, while they were up in Michigan! I met with them for breakfast & got to hear all about their daily lives down in Cincinnati & then went back over after dinner for a 'tea party' & princess movies with Natalie! And the last time I saw Joey he was just starting to pick himself up & now he's running all around!
This week also brought my other Danielle in to town from Arizona - on a more unfortunate event - the passing of her Grandfather. This man was at every single one of our dance competitions & recitals growing up & was known as a sweet ol' jokester! It was a very emotional day watching her family speak of a man well loved, but a great celebration of his life. It's not the circumstances that I want a friend to come home on, but I was glad to be there throughout the day with Danielle & toast a glass of wine in 'Gramps' honor when the day was done.
And as the circle of life goes, as one passes, one joins us in the world this week - Congratulations to our friends Samantha & Ryan on the birth of Knox! He was born early this morning at 1:44a.m. and weighed 6 lbs 10 oz! He was perfectly intact & they had an easy pregnancy! Colleen & I went out to meet him this morning after our breakfast with friend, Darcie! It was fun to ogle over him & bask in the glow of newness!
Take a look for yourself . . . SO CUTE!!
I can't believe it was just about a month ago that I was taking some maternity pictures of Sam {that we displayed at her shower!}
I am by no means a photographer, but was happy to help her capture the essence of her pregnancy!
It's been an endowed week of family & friends!!
And next week brings a little newness of our own as we will begin to move into our new space on the 1st!
